3. What is the OBD2 port and where can you find it in your vehicle?
For a better idea, you can think of the OBD2 diagnostic port as an ordinary USB port on a computer. It is a standardised interface used to connect the vehicle’s electronics to external diagnostic devices. Through this port, the EVpie adapter can safely communicate with the car’s control unit and read accurate data about the battery’s condition from it. Every modern car is required to be equipped with this port.
Where is the OBD2 port located?
In most vehicles, the port is located directly in the driver’s cabin and is easily accessible without tools. You will most often find it in these places:
- Under the steering wheel: In the area above the pedals (it may sometimes be hidden under a small plastic cover that you can simply flip open by hand).
- To the left of the steering wheel: In the lower part of the dashboard, for example near the fuse box or the bonnet release lever.
- In the centre console: Exceptionally under the ashtray or under a cover between the front seats.
Can’t find the port? The app will help you
If you have trouble locating the port in your car, open the EVpie mobile app and use the “Where is my OBD2?” feature. Simply select the exact make, model and year of manufacture of your vehicle. The app will then show you a photo or diagram with the exact location of the port marked.
Important notice for Tesla vehicle owners
Tesla cars have a specific architecture and you will not find a classic OBD2 port in the usual place. To connect our EVP-1 adapter, it is therefore necessary to use a special cable reduction.
